December in Lapland: Northern Lights, Snow & Arctic Safaris

Scenic view of heavy snow-covered spruce trees in Lapland with vibrant green aurora borealis in the night sky

Arctic Wonder During the Polar Twilight

December brings Lapland's mystical Kaamos—the winter polar night when the sun remains just below the horizon, bathing the snowy fells in surreal pastel pinks, purples, and deep ambers for four hours each day. With thick blankets of powdery snow covering the taiga forest and dark clear skies, it is the quintessential month for Arctic adventure.

Aurora Tracking Tip:

Stay north of the Arctic Circle (66°33′N) in areas like Levi, Saariselkä, or Rovaniemi. Ensure your accommodation is situated away from urban light pollution, or book a heated glass-roof igloo with an integrated aurora alarm system.

6-Day Lapland Winter Itinerary

Days 1 to 2: Rovaniemi & Arctic Circle Immersion

Arrive at Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) and equip yourself with extreme cold-weather thermal suits and boots provided by your safari lodge. Spend your first day crossing the Arctic Circle, visiting the Arktikum Science Museum to learn about Sámi culture, and enjoying your first night in a thermal glass igloo.

Days 3 to 4: Levi & Deep Wilderness Husky Safaris

Travel north to the winter resort of Levi. Take the reins of a 6-dog Siberian husky team for a thrilling 20km safari through silent, snow-laden pine forests. Warm up around an open fire inside a traditional kota tent with hot cloudberry juice. That evening, embark on a snowmobile excursion across frozen lakes to chase the Northern Lights.

Days 5 to 6: Reindeer Sleigh Rides & Finnish Smoke Sauna

Visit an authentic family-operated reindeer farm. Glide silently across the snow on a wooden sleigh pulled by reindeer while learning about age-old herding traditions. Conclude your journey with an authentic Finnish wood-fired sauna followed by a refreshing dip in a carved ice pool.

Winter Gear & Pacing Guidelines

Average temperatures range from -6°C to -18°C (21°F to 0°F). Proper multi-layering is essential: merino wool base layers, thick fleece mid-layers, and windproof down outer shells.
